These are my brothers. We like different clothes and different styles of music. We have differing views of politics and religion. We spend our money differently. We have different personalities and different aspirations. Our work ethic may be similar but our ethos is born from lives that are completely different. We want to change the world but in completely different ways. Our paths weren’t supposed to cross. Instead, they crashed. About the only thing similar in our lives are our wives - but just barely.  They aren’t like me, at all. But these are my brothers. And we are just alike.

An all important message for those who refuse to settle for anything less than the best in their lives.

Hip Hop MBA No. 8. Thank you, Rick Ross. Your methodology, while exquisitely sophisticated - works.

Biz: Virtual (But) Hustle: Physical

The business is virtual; the hustle is physical. That is our approach to doing business and developing an online presence for SICFIT. Our primary means of spreading the word is setting up camp at competitions around the U.S. and supporting the infrastructure, enabling the event to grow in relevance and notoriety. Grass roots business principle are key to executing long term and sustainable growth.

The photo may not look like much, but this is a typical weekend for our SICFIT Startup. A niche media website (SICFIT.com) with enormous capacity and potential, the company focuses on revenue through our online presence (e-commerce, advertising), equipment sales, apparel distribution, and media production. Our niche site appeals to athletes that train for the Sport of Fitness, i.e. The CrossFit Games.  “What the heck is that?” you ask. It’s likely to be one of mainstream Americas’ newest extreme sports. Reebok reportedly made a $150 million dollar commitment to the growing sport. And it’s pretty captivating. Imagine having to prepare for so many types of physical proficiency, you literally can’t practice and train to perfection. As an athlete, you’d hope that your training was more thorough/effective than the rest of your competitors.

The Hip Hop MBA

I tried to fool myself into believing that the corporate ladder was the place where I’d do my climbing. Growing up with movies like Scarface, Boiler Room, and Wall Street,  I would watch unsavory characters climb the ranks of power and riches. While I would certainly set aside their poor character, these movies showcased businessmen with unparalleled savvy, ambition, and work-ethic. I wanted to match their intensity. Watching each of these movies was like sitting in Entrepreneurialism 101, how to turn nothing into something. The hip hop community has always embraced these movies because it showed that anyone could rise from the ashes and into success.

Shortly after the late 80’s and early 90’s, the first of several rap moguls were made. Despite prior records, rugged public appearances, several of these men became legitimate business powers in a white collar-dominated corporate world. To name a few: Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Sean “Jay-Z” Carter, Russell Simmons, Clifford “Tip” Harris, and the newly-minted heavyweight Rick Ross. The music business is unkind to the typical artist but each of these figures found ways to achieve an unparalleled level of security by aiming high, never settling, and working tirelessly to meet the demands before them.

Vision, Passion, and Association. You may think that you can become a self-made man (or woman) but the truth is, everything around you helps determine you. Nothing is done on our own. Take a look at your office. Bright colors? Motivational? Inspirational? If not, that may be your problem. Now take a look at your friends. Are they satisfied, do they downplay you to others? If so, they may not be for you. From people to positive energy, the messages that you surround yourself with will likely play a part in your failure, mediocrity, or your success.

In this quick video blog, I talk about the influences in my life. You should see my white board with my personal expectations; some would laugh it off as ambitious or even absurd but those that truly know me know that I am serious.  Everything that I have ever wanted, whether deserved or not, has been visualized. My rate of success, when visualizing it beforehand, has been worth noting. With that, keep that in mind for yourself. If someone laughs at your dreams, they have no business living that dream with you.
