“You have to know that your fortune isn’t your own doing. Four years ago, my job was lost after 15 years. My company merged with another and they made their cuts. So be it. Three months later, I was on board at a better job in the Carolinas, with more money - on a better career path. Nine months later, I was diagnosed with cancer. I thought that I was going to die; I didn’t tell you for a full year. After fighting it for two years, I was told that I was cancer-free. Soon after, I lost that new great job. That was two lay-off’s in three years. That was October of 2011. By January of 2012, I accepted my best job offer yet, just three months later - with my former company’s chief competitor. I’m still 100% cancer-free after three biopsies. And here I am, better than I was when all was well. You have glory in your veins, son. As long as you remember that what you’ve done has never been by your own power, but His. Humility, Son. Humility.”
A quote by my father, Cleon Web Smith. He is cancer-free and professionally happier than ever. - ws.
Don’t stay down. There is always someone betting that you’ll get back up and reach your heights. Have faith in that. - ws.
Never outnumbered, never overwhelmed. Recently, I had a conversation with a college kid that I used to mentor. He felt it was always him against the world. He said that he could “never win because it always felt like there were so many that wanted him to fail”. I grew up feeling that same way and I still have occasions where I revert back to this, “I can never win” mentality. So, I could relate to his struggle. Sad but true. The message that I relayed to him, however, was far from sad:
It’s not you against the world. No one is ever outnumbered or overwhelmed. If you can’t find someone to your left side, right side, or behind you, you’re not done looking. There’s two important directions left that people seldom seem to search out. You can look upwards and you can look within. Like I told this young man, everything that you need to overcome anything is found in these two places.
HUSTLE PAUSE. The trust that a daughter has to have for her father is quite important. This photo doesn’t describe her initial fear of the situation, nor does it describe the relief, joy, and excitement that she felt towards the end of the trek. Hopefully, what it does hint at is the real satisfaction in my life. Fatherhood is a cool thing. A daughter trusting a father to navigate them through, both, the approach and conquering of fear is an even more fulfilling feeling. It’s almost like fatherhood is a metaphor for something much greater. Just my take on it. Stand Up Paddle Boarding at the CrossFit Sports Series in Austin, Texas. Photo by @MyIgnition.
