What We’re Capable Of…

Millennials. There is the pesky culture that manifests in many of us. We have bedtimes. We shorten our work days. We enjoy a moderate pace that promotes “longevity and consistency”. We don’t push the envelope. We charge it. We rent it. We delegate it. We wait to be commanded. We vacation every six weeks. We flat-brim it. We dye it. We tat it. And to be perfectly honest, we listen to more bass than to the substance flowing melodically over the beat, that fights for our attention.

As a result, we’re at an economic and ambitious stalemate. Or worse, still at home. We’re under-employed or just plain unemployed. And we tolerate all of this while we convince ourselves that this is just a period of self-realization. Throughout all of this, we feel that we’re finding ourselves and defining our purpose. And, I’ll admit that under the right circumstances, nothing is wrong with ANY of this. Unless you really want to make true on your dreams. This cannot be a recipe for the achievement of grandiose dreams. Too many people want exactly the same thing that you do.

The men and women that built what legacies we admire today would have scoffed at us. We do not know work. We don’t know sacrifice because over-extension is counter cultural, these days. But the truth of the matter is, their hypothetical reaction to our nature would be justified.  Over-extension is a sin against the endurance of our mind, body, and spirit, sure. But there is nothing like a breakthrough after a marathon that pushes the governor of our limitless endurance.

Toil upward into the night.  Carnegie, Rockefeller, Flagler, Morgan, and Vanderbuilt represented the Gilded Age’s work ethic, foresight, and success. And today’s titans - Zuckerberg, Buffett, Jobs, Gates, Cuban - work no differently. Just look to the Gilded Age as a reference for what is possible with a tireless pursuit. Do what’s necessary. Do what men and women are unwilling to do. And soon, you’ll realize that you’ve done what men and women are “incapable” of accomplishing. #HUSTLE
